Collagen Beauty Cream: Understanding the relationship between wrinkles and collagen

To understand the relationship between wrinkles and collagen, first it is necessary to understand what collagen is. Collagen is a fibrous protein, mostly present in the skin, muscles, cartilage, and bones. Collagen gives support to and connects the organs to the bones. An easy way to understand collagen is to say that is “glue that holds the body together”.

There are more than 25 kinds of collagen in our body, and makes up 70% of the dermis (which is the 2nd skin layer and underneath the top layer of the skin epidermis).What about wrinkles in the skin and collagen?

Collagen and elastin (which is a protein that gives flexibility to our organs) are accountable for the resilience and elasticity of our skin. Because of collagen and elastin, the skin is able to stretch whenever we move, and then it reverts to its original position.

As we age, the skin loses its elasticity and the capability to retain moisture. Collagen production diminishes and then wrinkles find their place in the face. Expression lines are more pronounced, due to the sagging of the skin, and the expression lines then become wrinkles. The skin starts to sag because it has lost its flexibility and resilience. The older we get, the deeper the wrinkles become.
