Collagen Skin: Understanding Smoother Skin With Collagen

Many surgical procedures, like chemical peels and laser resurfacing are supposed to take off the outer layers of skin, forcing new collagen to grow, which will eventually fill in the wrinkles. The opposite method is to fill in the wrinkles with a substance that is injected, such as either collagen or fat. This fills in the imperfections that give the skin a smoother appearance.

The most often used filler is bovine collagen. Since there is a chance of allergies, a skin test is recommended before its use. There are finally bioengineered collagen that is non-allergic and don’t require a skin test, and also synthetic fillers. Another alternative is a transplant of your own collagen or possibly even fat that is removed by a mini-liposuction process before the injection.Generally you will have a local anesthetic and the collagen product is injected right under the surface of the skin. There could possibly be some bruising or swelling in this area. The collagen injection refurbishes the skin’s natural collagen and your skin will begin to look younger as the wrinkles fill in.

Like your own natural collagen, injected collagen at some point will begin to break down and will need to be repaired. You may want to repeat this treatment a few times a year. But, injected fat seems to last a lot longer and the results that you receive may be permanent, especially if it was injected into some other parts of the face that contain fat.
